State of Slim #1

SOS map

In November a friend of mine posted this on Facebook.

“I Plan to coordinate a State of Slim support group on western slope. Still developing but message me if you want to participate. Read the book – State of Slim and let’s get healthy/stay healthy together… it’s what people from Colorado do! First meeting in a week – details to follow. Message me for info.”

And this is how it started!

On November 19, 2013 a group of approximately 6 ladies sat around a table in a coffee shop talking about the book State of Slim. Discussing the book and when and if to start phase one. Can we really do this during the holidays? Some of the ladies were in full force some were like I really need to wait until after the first of the year. After a bit of discussion it was decided that a few of us would start phase one on December 2, 2013.

“Have to share; I wrote this on a document I shared in our first meeting on November 19, 2013. It is so fun to look back now – amazing! I’m certainly looking back in February smiling. For those just starting – look ahead and know that it takes determination each day, moment to make your goals happen. Love State of Slim and what it has done for me.

11/19/13
‘ I want to give special thanks to Deanna Colaizzi and Peggy Wilms for their support of my journey. They’ve both been instrumental in helping me keep it simple while inspiring me that I can do this. I’m ready but admit I’m nervous to start in the middle of the holidays. Regardless I’m going to do this and stick with it so that I build that Mile High Metabolism and can look back in February with a smile knowing I’ve done it.’”

This is a post from the State of Slim FB page
“December 2, 2013 Today’s #StateofSlim Success Story comes from Carol. She started a #StateofSlim group in Grand Junction. Let’s cheer them on!

“First meeting of GJ State of Slim this morning. Group started phase 1 today. I’m so blessed to have amazing Grand Junction folks ready to do this together. We weighed, measured and discussed our respective ‘whys and purpose’. Thank you State of Slim for the research, the book, the support and encouragement!”

On the morning of December 2, 2013 the original support group started with I think a group of 6. Only 3 of the original meeting started on 12/2. To this day 5 of the original still meet every Monday morning to talk about the previous week and the week ahead, learning’s and ideas to be successful. Our group page now has over 35 members and is growing daily. Everyone is on different phases of the plan. 3 of the original 5 are on the 16 week journey, 1 started phase one over after a fun-filled NYE trip to Vegas and the last one is working to find her mental mind-set.

I personally met with a group of 3 after the first of the year. They are on phase 2 and having huge success. When I talked to them on week during week 8 the two ladies had lost a combined total of 21 lbs and the man himself had lost about 20 lbs. Can’t wait to see them in person again!

Carol my friend who brought this to life in Grand Junction has lost 22 pounds in 10 weeks and is well on her way to a rebuilt metabolism and “Fit by 50”! I keep telling her I am going to buy her a hot bikini for her big 50 vacation. She isn’t too keen on my bikini ideas. She just may change her mind before May. When she started her goal was to get to 140 half way through she changed her goal to 130. Monday she was below her original goal with 6 weeks left! AMAZING! I am so proud of her and all the changes she has made. She also had a little turbulence during phase 2 (gallbladder surgery) that didn’t stop her not one bit. Did slow done the amount of exercise but she kept with the healthy eating and rebuilding her metabolism. PS – Her husband is down 28 lbs!

SOS Carol & John

I am sure some of you are wondering what my role is and why I’ve been involved with this group. I am passionate about living a healthy lifestyle. I want to set a good example for my daughter and show her how eating healthy and exercising is important to your everyday life. I want to be a role model for women out there that say they can’t be fit and can’t eat healthy. I don’t want to have high blood pressure or a stroke when I get older and I also don’t want to have Type 2 diabetes. (Family traits)

I’ve learned over these last 10 weeks how important it is to have a mindset to accomplish a goal that has been set, I’ve learned how important it is for me to listen to what my mind says and what I want to achieve. I’ve learned how eating 7x a day is good for me and lastly I LOVE watching and helping others through their journey and pushing them to another level in their life.

This Friday I am lucky enough to be able to visit and tour the Anshutz Wellness Center in Denver. So excited for this opportunity!

Inspiration = Motivation

Yesterday I just happened to Pin this quote on pinterest.

 inspire

How did this pin become motivation for me? Friends of mine wrote me the following messages last night. Wow! Just brings tears to my eyes and greater motivation to share my love for fitness, health and happiness.

Friend #1– Do you know if there are any 5k/10k events Easter weekend in the GJ area? Need to get my feet wet. More walking due to the bad knees thing. I am so inspired by you!

Friend #2–I saw your pin and wanted to let you know that you truly are the reason I am where I am today. You inspired me to work out and to be healthy so many years ago, so thank you for kick starting my passion. You have been an inspiration to many.

  • My response–Awww thank you so much! I can’t believe you are doing a full Marathon way to go! Good luck! What’s really crazy is I ran into you during my crazy adrenaline high in the RnR at mile #9! I hope to continue to inspire many more!

Misfit Thanksgiving

Do you know friends who are divorced with no kids or family on the holidays?

That’s what this Thanksgiving was all about. Supporting our friends who needed us on this holiday. My friend Christina and I decided we would make the feast, give the chef a break from cooking and share with our friends who needed support and love.

EAT!

We divided and conquered the menu together.

Menu

Appetizer of Bacon wrapped Elk tenderloin – Chef

Turkey – Christina

Gravy – Chef (Christina bought jar but the chef didn’t like that idea)

Stuffing (German Style) – Christina

Sweet Potato Pie – Christina

Cranberry Sauce traditional – Christina

Serrano Pepper Cranberry Sauce (Mexican) – Christina

French’s Green Bean Casserole – Me

Mashed Potato’s – Me

Chunky Pecan Bars – Me

Pumpkin Pie – Christina

Apple Pie – I donated blood and they gave me a free pie.

DRINK!

Choke Cherry Merlot (Colorado) Vincent Winery

Cesar Bloody Marys’

Ménage Trios – California Red

Ménage Trios – Pinot Noir

Cupcake – Pinot Noir

Be Healthy!

I wanted to burn some calories on Thanksgiving morning so I hit Gold’s gym at 5:00 am with a friend and did combat, back home for a 2 hour nap and then hit my gym for Kick It at 9:00 total of 1,065 calories burned!

If you don’t have a gym open I bet you could find a Turkey Trot 5K to burn some calories. I chose Kick It instead this year because it’s a lot warmer in the gym and I burn more calories than running a 5K.

Let the festivities begin!

Christina and I started prepping for the big meal the day before. This is probably my favorite part of Thanksgiving. Hanging in the kitchen drinking wine, laughing and catching up with my friend.

Do you peel your celery? Christina does!

We set the table, made stuffing, cut the potatoes, made Serrano cranberry sauce, drank more wine and invited guests over to join us!

Three of us girls in the kitchen laughing, giggling and telling girl stories, only to get quiet when Christina’s misfit walks in. Let the party begin!

The Thanksgiving appetizer just so happened to get eaten the night before Thanksgiving. Very delicious, can’t beat fresh elk tenderloin wrapped in bacon “its a taste of heaven.”  We also had artichoke dip and homemade meatballs and sausage.

Three bottles of the Thanksgiving dinner wine were consumed before the big dinner. I only tasted two of the three because I had to get up at 4:15 in the morning for Combat!

Ménage à Trois

Pinot Noir

http://www.menageatroiswines.com/pinot-noir.php#

Fancy a little splendor in the glass? Turn down the lights, turn up the Barry White and uncork the Ménage à Trois Pinot Noir. When it comes to affairs of the palate, we’ve always felt that three was much more fun than one, so we played matchmaker and brought together grapes from three distinctive California wine growing regions known for producing exquisite Pinot Noir. Clarksburg grapes add bright flavors and a lovely perfume, North Coast grapes add silkiness, and Central Coast fruit rounds out the blend with beautiful complexity. Enhanced with French and American oak, our Pinot Noir’s is sure to have you waxing poetic. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways…

This was an ok Pinot not one of my favorites. I probably wouldn’t buy it again. If you like oak you will like this Pinot.

Ménage à Trois

California Red

Even if red wine is not your speed, give our Ménage à Trois Red a try. This wine exposes the fresh, ripe, jam-like fruit that is the calling card of California wine. Ménage à Trois Red brings together three strange bedfellows.

On top we’ve got Zinfandel, a saucy tease that brings blackberry and raspberry jam to the relationship. Merlot, with its generous mouth feel and red fruits, fits perfectly in the middle. The rich flavors and firm tannins of Cabernet Sauvignon make it the ideal.

I love this wine! It’s a great inexpensive blend.

I bought the Cupcake Pinot Noir because I love the Cupcake Red Velvet Cake wine.

http://www.cupcakevineyard.com/wines/reds/pinot-noir/#

“Our Pinot Noir has the aroma of cherries that carries through the palate with a touch of red currants and a hint of spice. It’s reminiscent of a cherry cupcake with currant coulis.”

What a fun night with friends! We laughed and laughed and laughed! Definitely a night to remember!

What do you do on the eve of Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving day!

On my way home from the gym I called to see if the bird had made it to the oven after the party the night before. Christina has only cooked a turkey once before. She told me she could only find the neck in the bird and had it cooking on the stove for the gravy. I thought it was strange that there were no giblets in a fresh turkey. Oh well no biggie the neck will make great gravy.

We arrived and started the dinner with Bloody Mary’s. I like mine Cesar style.

Cesar Bloody Mary

Ice

Kettle One Vodka

Salt

Pepper

Dill

Horseradish

Celery seed

Pepperoncini juice

Clamato juice

Tabasco

Garlic

Olives

Celery

Pepperoncini pepper

Yummmmmmm!

The oven timer went off and the bird was ready to come out! Looks magnificent!

When we started cutting into the turkey guess what we found? Yep! The giblets!

Time to Mangia!

Wine with dinner was a Choke Cherry Merlot from a friend of ours vineyard.

Everything was excellent! My favorite sides were the sweet potato pie and the green bean casserole. What is your favorite side?

Chunky Pecan Bars

After a few hours of football we had dessert and then I was stuffed like the turkey!

ATL & Southern Hospitality!

Final ATL experiences!

The next stop for dining was the Atlanta Grill located in the Ritz Carlton of Atlanta on Peach Street. This night we were dining with a colleague of ours, what fun three ladies can have at a beautiful restaurant.

Bask in the stylish comfort and warmth of Atlanta Grill – an exceptional Atlanta steak house in a landmark location. Featuring club-like seating indoors and seasonal outdoor dining on the veranda with views of Peachtree Street, it’s Atlanta Southern dining as never before.

  • Sumptuous menu of grilled steaks, chops and seafood along with Southern-inspired cuisine
  • Convivial atmosphere and impeccable service are hallmarks of this steak house in Atlanta
  • Dynamic murals commissioned for the Atlanta Grill feature rich colors and warm hues that perfectly compliment the restaurant’s décor
  • Atlanta outdoor dining is available on the veranda with wrought-iron railings and flickering gaslight-styled lanterns
  • The Cheater’s Booth accommodates six in a cozy table setting with privacy draperies, but is most popular for an intimate dinner for two

Dinner started with a bottle of Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon a delicious wine and perfect for the evening.

Deep, dense and concentrated, the flavors echo intense aromas of blueberry; bramble and cassis intermingled with cocoa, cinnamon and sweet, toasty oak. Bold, yet supple on the palate, the dark, richly fruity flavors are balanced by a bright acidity and long finish.

I started my meal off with the Fire Roasted Tomato Soup made with Georgia Grown Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The soup was an excellent way to start the dining experience.

My entrée choice for the evening was the special Grilled Halibut, Brussel Sprouts and a Sweet Potato Mash. Typing this is making my mouth water. The Brussel sprouts were a bit salty; the halibut was cooked to perfection and the sweet potato mash a perfect ending to the palette.

The Atlanta Grill is an excellent fine dining experience. I highly recommend visiting the Atlanta Grill just be prepared for a very large check at the end of dinner.

The last night in the ATL we decided it was time for some fun! So we headed to the Hard Rock Café.

 Est. November 9, 1992

If the B-52’s song “Love Shack” were to ever find a permanent home, Atlanta’s Hard Rock Cafe would be the place. With its southern charm and renowned hospitality, this location truly gives meaning to our “Love All Serve All” motto. Situated in Atlanta’s Cornerstone Building, our restaurant could be considered a cornerstone of southern rock.  Packed with memorabilia from rock legends with roots south of the Mason-Dixon Line, this cafe serves up delicious delicacies every day.

I ordered the Purple Haze cocktail. This specialty cocktail is made with vodka, gin, razz rum, mixed with sweet & sour topped with Sierra Mist and Chambord Black Raspberry liqueur. The two best parts of this $12 drink are one you get to keep the fun hurricane glass and the second is if you want a second drink its $8 and some change.  Lucky for me I had my MARTA one dollar coins to pay for my second drink.

Hard Rock food is Hard Rock food it’s the same at every restaurant I have been to.

I had the Famous Fajitas grilled chicken served with pico de gallo, shredded Monterey Jack and Cheddar cheeses, fresh guacamole, sour cream, shredded lettuce and hot flour tortillas.

We had fun requesting songs from the DJ. He said he grew up with Kid Rock and knew him very well. (When I started asking him to play Kid Rock songs he didn’t have them and never heard of them.) If you have the Shazam app it works great in the Hard Rock. I found a few songs that night that I liked and have downloaded.

Don’t forget to stop in the memorabilia shop on your way out to pick up your entire Hard Rock garb!

Atlanta is a fun town I would definitely go back to visit.

Coming from the West the South does have some cultural differences that take some getting used to.

However, the Southern Hospitality is true and the ATL did a great job of making me feel welcome!

When you travel what do you look for in a restaurant?

NY Best Seller! Fifty

Fifty shades of Grey!

My book club is reading the book Fifty Shades of Grey. We meet tomorrow night to talk about the book. I thought  I would share my thoughts now.

I think one of my friends said it best …”Fifty Shades of Grey”? I’m reading it now. It’s explicit, but I can’t put it down!!!

I loved this book and the sequels, can’t wait for #4.

Set the sex/porn aside for the moment. Don’t we all just love a great Cinderella story? I am a helpless romantic at heart. Just the romance and the love Christen has for Ana in the book  keeps you reading. Yeah a billionaire hot bodied man doesn’t hurt either.

Fifty Shades of f$&$@up is so true for all of us. No I haven’t been abused by a crack whores pimp but trust me I have had my share of life’s f$&@upness. The fact that someone can overcome their f$&@up issues is huge.Christen focused on work and basically par taking in BDSM to deal with his f$&@up ness. Once he realized he did love her he would go to the extreme to keep her. Now who wouldn’t want to read about that love story.

Favorite parts of the book!

There are so many but here are a few. I loved that Christen went to the hardware store to buy a few pieces of hardware from Ana. I am sure this would be so unrealistic for a billionaire but it’s a book and didn’t you get that feeling when reading like wow he’s here really here. Of course Ana is naive enough to really not realize he is there to see her and he get jealous while there.

I loved when she was at the bar and couldn’t stop thinking about him. Come on I know you once had those thoughts. Back when I was in school we didn’t have awesome technology like today. I loved that she was brave enough to call him, I am sure her inhibitions were low due to the alcohol, making that phone call pretty easy. But the fact that he actually showed up and took care of her was awesome! Holding her ponytail while puking!!!! How many 20 something guys would really do that?

Ana calls it how she sees it with him. Her honesty and innocence just keeps me rooting for her. I love how she wants Christen to change and the realization that he may never change being honest with herself. She is real and I love that.

Can you imagine what it would be like to not be  touch the person you love not be able to run your hands up his chest or kiss his neck? I was just as confused as Ana on the touching thing. What happened to you Fifty that you can’t handle a loving touch? What is it going to take to get you past this fear?

I could go on and on! Will give an update on what my book clubs thoughts are after we meet tomorrow night!

Quotes!

A few years ago I developed a liking to quotes. Each year I make a calendar for my family members and include quotes on each monthly page.  Since I found Pinterest I have found many “quotes” that I love.

Here are a few to share that I find inspirational.

I love love love this quote!

Life Is Too Short, Break The Rules,

Forgive Quickly, Kiss Slowly, Love Truly,

 Laugh Uncontrollably,

And Never Regret Anything That Made You Smile.

Life May Not Be The Party We Hoped For, But While We’re Here,

We Should Dance… Never regret

Never regret a day in your life.

 Good days give you Happiness.

Bad days give you Experiences.

Both are essential to life. Keep going… Happiness keeps you Sweet,

Trials keep you Strong, Sorrows keep you Human, Failures keep you Humble,

Success keeps you Glowing,

But Only God keeps you Going!

Just a few more!

Mothers Day!

Mother’s Day is a week away. What will you do for your mother?

Mother’s Day gives me an opportunity to share my musings from 2 perspectives. The first is from a daughters perspective and the second is from a Mother’s. Being a daughter is wonderful because you can do so many fun girly things with your mom. Shopping, talking and learning. Mom’s can be your hero, your confidant and your savior. Here is a poem  I found for my mom!

Guiding Light Mom

Mom, from the time I was really young,
I realized I had someone…you,
who always cared,
who always protected me,
who was always there for me no matter what.
You taught me right from wrong,
and pushed me to do the right thing,
even when it was hard to do.
You took care of me when I was sick,
and your love helped make me well.
You had rules,
and I learned that when I obeyed them,
my life was simpler, better, richer.
You were and are
the guiding light of my life.
My heart is filled with love for you,
my teacher, my friend, my mother.

By Karl and Joanna Fuchs

Becoming a mother is the most incredible experience in a woman’s life. After 9 grueling months of pregnancy  and  excruciating pain of labor and anticipating the moment when you hold your precious child in your arms. That day becomes a new world for women. The day my beautiful daughter was born I realized how I could love someone from the depth of my soul. When my amazing beautiful daughter was born I held her in my arms and immediately knew she would become the most precious and important person in our lives. My One in a Million!

Here is a poem I would like to share:

My Miracle

© KRISTEN DAVID
From the moment your were born
I knew what love was really about
I loved you more than anything
Beyond the shadow of a doubt
The bond I felt was unbreakable
And instantly I knew
That I would spend eternity
Thanking god for my miracle, you
Time has quickly passed us by
And now you’re quite the little lady
But in my eyes you will always be
My precious little baby
One day in the future
God will bless you with a miracle too
Then you will know the depth of love
That I will always have for you
I will be here for you always
And forever and a day
Loving you unconditionally
Every step along the way
