What’s it really like?

I started having issues with my hip while training for the Nike San Fran Half Marathon which was in October 2013.

After the race I cut out running for the most part and started lifting more. Doing things that didn’t aggravate my hip.

After 10 months of issues it was time to go see the doctor. My family would tell you that they had been trying to get me to go for months. I was in denial. I was scared and really didn’t want to know the “REAL” issue.

I didn’t want to give up my fitness routine and I truly didn’t want to know what the X-ray was going to tell us.

In August my chiropractor suggested I get checked for a hernia. My workout partner said she was a quack and to go to the Sports Medicine doctor in her office. That’s what I decided to do.

During my first visit he did take X-rays of my back and hips. Conclusion = Hip Flexor Tendonitis. He had me on 8 weeks of workout restrictions. No running, No jumping, No explosive moves, No lunges and I needed to attend 8 weeks of Physical Therapy. I was good with this. I cut out kickboxing and replaced it with the elliptical and my trainer had me do modifications during those particular workouts. PT was nice because I learned a lot of new stretches and ideas of what needed to happen for my body to get stronger in the areas that were weak after compensating for so long.

 At my 8 week visit with the Sports Med doc he REALLY wanted me to have an arthogram and an MRI. I was in major denial about getting the arthrogram. Really who wants a huge needle stuck into their hip-joint? I managed to talk him out of this for another 8 weeks as long as I didn’t “CHEAT” on my restrictions. When I got home and talked to my family they told me that I would cheat and just get it done and rule out the laberal tear. (This was my biggest fear) So I scheduled the appointment.

This is a random photo I found on the intrenet that shows what an Arthorgram is! See that long needle going into the hip-joint? This is what scared the bejesus out of me.

I really really didn’t want to have this done.

The day had come and I was an emotional wreck waiting to go back to the room. When the radiology tech came to get me my emotions just start pouring out. She was so great in comforting me and making me feel a ease. The radiologist doing the procedure was amazing. He talked me through everything and really helped me relax. The initial insertion is the hardest part. I didn’t feel much of anything after he got the needle in a little pressure here and there.

He laughed and asked if he could share with one of his partners one of my buddies!

On to the MRI!

I’ve never had an MRI before either.

The MRI techs were amazing.

I had on some HUGE fancy hospital shorts and I was nervous therefore I was freezing. They wrapped me up in blankets and gave me all the instructions along with some head phones and a cloth over my eyes. They told me it was going to be loud. Man it’s like a jack hammer for 45 min and you can’t move. I highly recommend the earphones and an eye mask it helped me relax and not think about getting inched into that claustrophobic machine.

Results??? My radiologist buddy had me come into his office when we were all done. He said I don’t have a labreal tear but I do have degenerative joint diease.

All I know is he told me it’s time to switch to biking.

I haven’t been back to the Sports Medicine doc yet to see what he’s plan of action is going to be. What I do know is that I have arthritis and a flap. The fluid from the arthogram helped with the swelling and my pain has been minimal for now. Running is pretty much out of the question I do not want to tear the labrum.

I’ve been focusing on lifting weights and stretching. I see in my future a fast “WOGGER”. I love the races and even if I can’t run I can wog a pretty quick pace. Time will tell!

Long story short! The arthorgram wasn’t near as bad as I had pictured in my mind!

Seriously how have I missed posting since the end of July? Life has just been crazy busy (I know not a good excuse) and some major writers block.

The ColorDash Review

The world’s brightest 5K run!

Before all of us

Look for a ColorDash race near you! I promise you won’t be disappointed. The Colordash team has teamed up with not-for-profit charities nationwide in 2014. They teamed up with Partners in in GJ Colorado which is a local not-for-profit similar to Big Brother/Big Sister and raised almost $10,000 for them from the 5K.Not only will you be running for a great cause you will be having a fabulous time.

The ColorDash team is fun and high energy. When we arrived at packet pick up you could feel the energy all through Sports Authority. It was seamless I just had to give them my registration form. The shirts, bibs and pins were all packaged together and made it simple for the team to hand them out and they even had tutus for sale which saved me a hunting trip around the mall.

I was excited that my Mini Me and her friend were joining us for the race. After packet pickup it was prep time for shirts and tutus. Mini Me knew exactly what they were going to do to their t-shirts. Yes very creative and original thinking. We didn’t see any one else with t-shirts made like theirs. Which makes her very happy?

We arrived to the race early to feel the high energy and listen to the music. There were some booths set up and people to watch. Most were taking photos and some were running around throwing color at their friends. Then announcer did a fabulous job of keeping the energy level high and enthusiastic. The check presentation for the donation occurred prior to kicking off the race. What an awesome way to support our local community.

9:00 the race began it was a lap around Canyon view park two times. There were approximately 6 color stations throughout the course. The stations had people throwing the color on you and they seemed to be having fun themselves and getting all colored up too. Mainly the color they were throwing.

After finishing our two laps we all gathered together and took some pictures and drank water. The temperature outside was HOT and we could have used a couple of water stations during the course. The fire truck was there for those who were over heated to get sprayed off with the hose.

We then waited for the Color Explosion to take place. The girls were excited to get more color on them. The color explosion is a big circle and everyone throws up their color bags. So much fun!

This race is not a timed race it’s a fun race for EVEYONE. All ages, shapes, sizes, athletic ability just great great fun for everyone in the family!

GJ State of Slim group started their journey on December 2, 2013 and have lost over 175 pounds from numerous members of the support group. Members are in different stages of their journey and many with different goals to achieve.

Welcome to the Grand Junction State of Slim support group – GJ State of Slim. If you’re reviewing this you’ve been added by someone who cares about you and your health. On December 2, 2013 5 women (and one supportive husband) started our 16 week State of Slim journey to build our Mile High metabolism. It’s working!

If you want to join our group we ask that you read the book State of Slim by Holly Wyatt, M.D. and Jim Hill, PhD. It is the foundation of our journey. (We are not affiliated with state of slim and gain nothing by recommending their book or program – we just really believe it works and are passionate about it.)

This is a support group only! We do not offer medical advice. We encourage anyone to read this book and begin your journey but anyone with more than 50 pounds to lose should consult with a physician.

Here are a few comments about our journeys together as the GJ State of Slim!

• I think the energy and strength are my motivator to be as healthy as possible. I had an 83 year old patient tell me the other day that if he had known he was going to live so long he would have taken better care of his body. I want to be healthy as possible as long as possible and eating fresh and exercising are the ticket….Nurse Practitioner

• Been an up and down week for me. Exercise has been hard, working between 11-13hrs per day. I need to remember my whys: 1. This is about me and not work. My work will certainly wait, no one will do it for me. As of this morning, I’m down 10.5 pounds and feel good. Next week I am certain will be better!

• Only two days back on Phase 1 and I hit a new low.

• I really like this, remember if you overindulged one meal, don’t give up, get back on program!

• Starting week 4 of Phase 2 today, I’m down 20 and my wife is down 17…keep it up…it’s worth it.

• Day 12 for me, down 9 pounds and feel great. Monday marks my journey into phase 2, however I wondering if it’s ok to stay in phase 1 one more week?

o Yes you can. The main reason Phase II was designed at week 3 was: with no processed food, decreased sodium, no fruit, no alcohol, etc., it would jump-start metabolism with balance of carb and proteins, the meals are close to decrease hunger, stabilize blood sugar and, of course, water weight falls off so results start to happen quickly. Watch the following: 1) energy level-remember if you are sticking to portions you are consuming only about 1300 calories, men about 1500, 2) watch for cloudy thinking and being pissed off-lol; slow digesting carbs are restricted, right? and 3) if you start craving what you have cut out: chips, sugar, bread…this is typically behavioral driven thus the Indulgence Meal was designed so you fill the craving a bit by having something on day 7 to look forward to. I support you, girl!

• My man is wicked modest and private, but I’m sharing. He started SOS for a second time. After 6 weeks, he is down 19.4″, 2″ in chest and 5.5″ in waist AND he had hip surgery two weeks ago is on crutches with no physical activity!

• Finished my second go round of phase I. Since November, I have lost 13 lbs. Weight loss is usually quite challenging for me, so this is good progress. Now, into phase II, hoping to continue some more losses. Feeling good, a bit less morning fatigue.

• I am in phase 2 and down about 15 lbs. I have learned that change takes time, enjoy the process, and sticking to the eating plan of the SOS, gives me freedom in other areas of my life.

• Phase 1 day 12, down almost 10 pounds, 4 1/2+ inches……hubby is down into numbers he hasn’t seen in years AND his blood sugar has ranged between low 90’s-115ish……it was over 200 2 days before we started!! We’ve learned that we are in control of our health & success and we are strong in many ways! Thank you for inviting us along this amazing journey!

• Wow- I guess I have changed! Thank you Deanna for reminding me how pictures can be motivating and thank you Carol for taking the recent picture of me!

• Are your whys written down where you can see them multiple times each day? The ‘why’ is so powerful and My whys are what help me get past temptations. They help me know without a doubt I will finish what I started and then keep me going through maintenance.

How are you reminded of your whys each day?

• Well, I got on my scale today and am amazed to say I am the lowest weight I have been in 19 years. Woohoo!

• So my SOS moment today- had to show my driver’s license at the bank and I realized that I actually weigh less than what it says! Whaaaatttt???!!! Oh yeah- happy dance!!

• Good morning GJ Slimmers! Today I want to remind everyone to hydrate! We’ve been very focused on food and exercise and I’m sure you’re also drinking your water. Just a reminder – the book suggests to drink 50% of your body weight in ounces. So if you weigh 170 lbs, you need 95 oz today. If you weigh 150, you need 75 oz.

Typically in the winter I have really dry hands and chapped lips and cannot put on enough chap stick or lotion. I noticed yesterday I’m using less lotion throughout the day. My hands are still dry (comes with the dry climate we live in) but they’re not bothering me. And I have put a lot less Chap Stick on… hydrate from within! On a separate but kind of related note – my finger nails are stronger and growing.

I plan to raise a tall glass of h2O to all of you at lunch time today – cheers!

• Ladies… Today I weighed myself on the scale at the gym but it appeared broken. After a few minutes I realized – I had to set the scale down to a lower weight to make it work. First time in 8 years I’ve been here and it feels awesome. I’m here on the treadmill slugging away but movement is movement and I’m going to keep my eye on the journey ahead. Thanks to all of you for joining me on this journey.

• I love the change I’m seeing on the inside as well as the physical change. My entire approach to health and wellness is being redefined. I think a lot more about my choices and WHY and have finally come to realize that I own my journey. Of course it helps to be a size smaller after 4 weeks .

• My husband ordered an outfit on-line for me for Christmas. I was very worried it wouldn’t fit since he went down a size. Um – it’s almost too big. SOS works. Please for those just joining us – read the book and understand what a mile high metabolism means so you can build one. It’s so much more than exercise and eating less. Exercise and WHAT we eat and when are key. Love this journey.

• You’ll see a little less of the Gj State of Slimmers this week. Everyone who started phase 1 on 12/2 lost weight, inches and most lost body fat too. First time in my history I’ve lost weight in December. Yahoo!! Next week we’re stirring it up a bit. Meet at Golds Gym at 5:45 for weigh in and a group picture, then join us for body combat at 6:00 am. Let’s start the Christmas week with sweat and encouragement! The subsequent meetings will be as scheduled at four winds. Anyone else who will be starting phase 1 after the holidays is always welcome to join our support group now.

• Just realized that eating my chocolate muffins with oatmeal has cured cravings. I wasn’t getting the oatmeal for a few days. Can’t slack on any component of plan.

• Oh and on phase 2 we finally get to eat ostrich. Been craving that almost every day… .

• Pumpkin chili rocks! I had to speed up recipe and sauté the peppers and onion in a little olive oil- didn’t read that it was a slow cooker recipe! Plus side…I have lunch already for tomorrow!

• Never lost 6.4 pounds in one week in my life! Thanks for all the support! Ready for week two!

• We can order 12 pack of 1 pound bags and can mix cpb2 and pb2 for $80 plus shipping and tax.

Chocolate cheesecake muffins
These are modifications I made to original recipe
Vanilla protein powder and 2 tablespoons cocoa powder( didn’t have choc)
Ran out of egg whites once and used half water/3 egg whites
Increased Greek yogurt to 3/4 cup as they were dry
2 tsp cinnamon ( I love cinnamon )
1/4 tsp chipotle powder(brings out chocolate flavor, like Mexican brownies)
Baked 325 for 13 minutes
Great to mix CPB2 and frost as you go

• Doing great, you Grand Junctioners. It’s so worth following exactly, especially Phase I. You will reap the benefits. The brain power is a great effect.

• Day one complete… Not too bad food wise but I did not get in all my exercise. Tomorrow will be better. Spent the last 2.5 hours cooking and prepping food for the next few days. Made the smoothie for snack tonight with chocolate pb2… It was great!

• Good Morning Slimmers!

I have to share something with you. Last night at our meeting we talked about the guidelines of Phase 1. So I am mentally preparing to start phase 1 on 12/2. My normal routine doesn’t consist of eating breakfast an hour after I wake up. Typically I don’t eat until 8:30 or 9:00 am. This morning after getting home from the gym I immediately made a protein shake. I think this could become a regular routine for me.

What are you doing to mentally prepare for phase 1?

o When I got home last night I started watching my taped episodes of biggest loser and the voice. At 1130 I finally went to bed. This morning when the alarm went off I started rationalizing more sleep and no walk. But then I went to my WHYs… I realized that my reasons for doing this are important enough to get up even after only 5 hours if sleep. So glad I did it.

Through the canyon in the sun, over the pass packed with snow and semi- trucks chaining up, over the top and down the mountain only to get stopped by Clark County Sheriff

..”Ma’am you were coming down that hill pretty fast…Sorry Sir I thought the speed limit was 75 until I saw you…Do you have ID, registration and proof of insurance?……Watch the speed Ma’am and have a nice day.”

After getting stopped for speeding and lucky enough to not get a ticket I found my way to Denver picked up my SIL and headed to the Anshutz Wellness Center. Once we finally found the facility we met up with Peggy. She shared with us that Extreme Weightloss was they’re interviewing for the next show. How exciting is that!

The building is four stories and filled with tons of energy and lots of fun people running around.

We met a very nice young lady at the front as we walked into the facility. She has lost over 80+ pounds on the State of Slim and just beams from ear to ear. If I remember right her name was Tamica great person to meet when you walk in the door.

They have a new metabolic kitchen and offer classes to teach State of Slimmers how to cook meals.

Every summer up on the midway roof they have a fresh herb and vegetable garden. All the employees who work there take turns planting and maintain the garden. Can you imagine how great it would be to take home fresh organic vegetables and herbs from your place of employment every day during the season?

The bistro is one of the greatest perks. I wish our hospital would serve the items that this bistro serves. All the items served are State of Slim ready and fresh! Please could I just have the muffins made and shipped to me weekly?

Next we stopped at the King Soopers mock-up grocery store. Classes are taught about how to read labels and shopping for healthy groceries. My own personal reminder is the best items are on the outside isles of the grocery store.

Now on to gym killer. The machines they have are from Italy and keep track of your workouts and visits. The cardio equipment has Wi-Fi. Often times the employees are required to take a break and work out at this amazing facility. They have an indoor track and a metabolic testing room with bod pods and many other types of equipment to help Slimmers with the success of their journey.

The locker room is connected to an indoor lap pool and therapeutic hot tub. Man I could use that hot tub right about now. In the locker room they have massage therapists, steam room and sauna. Nicest locker room I’ve ever been in.

I was then a very lucky to have Peggy give us a tour of the executive offices and I had amazing opportunity to meet Dr. John Peters. He was very shy and over whelmed by us. He did sign my State of Slim book! Then we followed Peggy to another office where she knocked on the door and interrupted the meeting. It was Dr. Holly Wyatt’s office yep I was one lucky girl! Dr. Holly was all smiles and even allowed me to have my picture taken with her. Time was limited for us all but man how I would have loved to sit down and just have a short conversation with her.

State of Slim #1

In November a friend of mine posted this on Facebook.

“I Plan to coordinate a State of Slim support group on western slope. Still developing but message me if you want to participate. Read the book – State of Slim and let’s get healthy/stay healthy together… it’s what people from Colorado do! First meeting in a week – details to follow. Message me for info.”

And this is how it started!

On November 19, 2013 a group of approximately 6 ladies sat around a table in a coffee shop talking about the book State of Slim. Discussing the book and when and if to start phase one. Can we really do this during the holidays? Some of the ladies were in full force some were like I really need to wait until after the first of the year. After a bit of discussion it was decided that a few of us would start phase one on December 2, 2013.

“Have to share; I wrote this on a document I shared in our first meeting on November 19, 2013. It is so fun to look back now – amazing! I’m certainly looking back in February smiling. For those just starting – look ahead and know that it takes determination each day, moment to make your goals happen. Love State of Slim and what it has done for me.

“First meeting of GJ State of Slim this morning. Group started phase 1 today. I’m so blessed to have amazing Grand Junction folks ready to do this together. We weighed, measured and discussed our respective ‘whys and purpose’. Thank you State of Slim for the research, the book, the support and encouragement!”

On the morning of December 2, 2013 the original support group started with I think a group of 6. Only 3 of the original meeting started on 12/2. To this day 5 of the original still meet every Monday morning to talk about the previous week and the week ahead, learning’s and ideas to be successful. Our group page now has over 35 members and is growing daily. Everyone is on different phases of the plan. 3 of the original 5 are on the 16 week journey, 1 started phase one over after a fun-filled NYE trip to Vegas and the last one is working to find her mental mind-set.

I personally met with a group of 3 after the first of the year. They are on phase 2 and having huge success. When I talked to them on week during week 8 the two ladies had lost a combined total of 21 lbs and the man himself had lost about 20 lbs. Can’t wait to see them in person again!

Carol my friend who brought this to life in Grand Junction has lost 22 pounds in 10 weeks and is well on her way to a rebuilt metabolism and “Fit by 50”! I keep telling her I am going to buy her a hot bikini for her big 50 vacation. She isn’t too keen on my bikini ideas. She just may change her mind before May. When she started her goal was to get to 140 half way through she changed her goal to 130. Monday she was below her original goal with 6 weeks left! AMAZING! I am so proud of her and all the changes she has made. She also had a little turbulence during phase 2 (gallbladder surgery) that didn’t stop her not one bit. Did slow done the amount of exercise but she kept with the healthy eating and rebuilding her metabolism. PS – Her husband is down 28 lbs!

I am sure some of you are wondering what my role is and why I’ve been involved with this group. I am passionate about living a healthy lifestyle. I want to set a good example for my daughter and show her how eating healthy and exercising is important to your everyday life. I want to be a role model for women out there that say they can’t be fit and can’t eat healthy. I don’t want to have high blood pressure or a stroke when I get older and I also don’t want to have Type 2 diabetes. (Family traits)

I’ve learned over these last 10 weeks how important it is to have a mindset to accomplish a goal that has been set, I’ve learned how important it is for me to listen to what my mind says and what I want to achieve. I’ve learned how eating 7x a day is good for me and lastly I LOVE watching and helping others through their journey and pushing them to another level in their life.

This Friday I am lucky enough to be able to visit and tour the Anshutz Wellness Center in Denver. So excited for this opportunity!
